Renovation and reconstruction of wooden monuments

Restoring wooden monuments requires a combination of conservation knowledge, technology, patience, and craftsmanship. At Viktor-Art, we restore, reconstruct, and preserve sculptures, religious figures, bas-reliefs, ornaments, altar elements, church furnishings, decorative objects, and historical woodcarvings.
Our task isn’t to “refresh” an object at all costs. We first analyze the material, state of preservation, paint layers, defects, previous repairs, tool marks, construction method, and function of the object. Only then do we select the scope of work: conservation, stabilization, reconstruction of missing elements, polychrome, patina, gilding, or complete restoration of damaged details.
Wood preservation and facility stabilization
Every renovation begins with an assessment of the wood’s condition. We check for cracks, delamination, defects, dirt, old coatings, mechanical damage, and signs of biological degradation. When working with historic buildings, it’s crucial to be as precise as possible and avoid damaging their historical value.
Stabilization may include cleaning, consolidating weakened fragments, gluing, filling gaps, protecting the surface, and preparing for further painting or carving. The scope depends on the object and whether the goal is to preserve maximum authenticity or to reconstruct it for use.
Reconstruction of missing carving details
We reconstruct missing elements based on existing fragments, photographic documentation, stylistic analogies, 3D scanning, modeling, and hand-carving. If the object has symmetrical ornamentation, we can decipher the missing fragment from the preserved side. If the detail is completely lost, we prepare a reconstruction consistent with the period, scale, and woodworking.
Depending on the requirements, the reconstruction can be intentionally clear to the specialist or visually integrated into the overall design. Such decisions should be based on the nature of the building, the investor’s expectations, and conservation principles.

Polychrome, gilding and painting of figures
A polychrome sculpture is not simply painting. Color, light, shadows, patina, gilding, and the degree of gloss must work in harmony with the form. In our studio, we perform full figure painting, retouching, layer reconstruction, gilding, patina, and aging. We select the technique appropriate to the object’s style, display location, and desired effect.
In sacred figures, the face, hands, robes, and details are particularly important. These elements determine the overall impression of the sculpture. Good polychrome should highlight the carving, not obscure it.
Modern technologies in the service of reconstruction
We also utilize modern tools in our restoration: 3D scanning, digital modeling, CNC milling, and photographic documentation. This allows us to more accurately recreate missing pieces, verify proportions, prepare a reconstruction model, and create a base, which is then finished by the sculptor’s hand.
Technology doesn’t replace the experience of the carver and conservator. However, it does provide greater control over dimensions, symmetry, repeatability, and accuracy to the original. This is especially important in wooden monuments, as any error in proportion is readily apparent.
During reconstruction, we can also prepare an element so that it is recognizable from a conservation perspective as a complement, but visually does not interfere with the overall experience. This is a compromise between honesty regarding the object's history and the need to restore its full form.
