Reproducing a sculpture is not copying

From the outside, the process may seem simple: scan, digital model, milling, and finished copy. In practice, each of these stages involves decisions that influence the character of the final sculpture. The original bears traces of the artist's hand, natural asymmetries, micro-damage, wear, and details that the machine itself doesn't understand.

Therefore, good reproduction isn't about mindlessly replicating a 3D mesh. It's important to know which elements to preserve, which to rebuild, which to simplify technologically, and which to leave to manual processing.

From original to digital model

3D scanning captures proportions, shape, and many subtle surface transitions. However, it is not a magical recording of reality. Deep undercuts, sharp crevices, shiny surfaces, damage, and restricted access areas may require modeling corrections.

After scanning, the model usually needs to be cleaned, repaired, gaps filled, and prepared for a specific technique. A bas-relief is processed differently than a full-scale figure, an altar ornament, or an organ casing element.

5-axis CNC milling and the hand of a sculptor

Multi-axis milling allows for control over scale, proportion, and much of the geometry. However, the tool has limited diameter, length, and accessibility. Tight undercuts, delicate folds, hairlines, fingers, micro-ornaments, and soft transitions often require subsequent chiseling.

In premium designs, the machine prepares the shape, while the sculptor restores its expression. This is especially important for faces, hands, garments, and ornaments, where quality is determined by the light on the surface and the naturalness of the lines.

Wood changes the reproduction process

Wood doesn't behave like metal or plastic. It has grain direction, moisture content, stresses, and natural movement. Milling removes material, changes the stress pattern, and can expose fragments of different density.

Therefore, a wooden reproduction must consider species selection, gluing, grain direction, hollowing, mounting method, and display conditions. These are decisions that cannot be resolved by a 3D scan alone.
