The scan is not the end of the job
3D scanning captures the geometry of an object, but it doesn't always capture the author's intention. It can capture damage as detail, shadows as voids, and hard-to-reach areas as missing data. Therefore, the raw scan requires evaluation and processing.
When it comes to wooden sculpture, it's particularly important to determine whether the model will be archived or whether it will be actually made in the material. The model must be technologically prepared for milling.
What affects scan quality
- surface access and number of scanning directions
- type of material, gloss and color of the surface
- deep undercuts and narrow gaps
- scale of the object and required accuracy
- subsequent CNC or manual machining
Modeling from scratch or after scanning
Not every project begins with a finished sculpture. Sometimes the client has photos, a sketch, an idea, a fragment of a detail, or an artist's concept. In such cases, the model is created from scratch or by combining several sources: a scan, documentation, a drawing, and the modeler's experience.
