Viktor-Art - Exclusive Wood Carving

Large-scale wooden figures. Large scale, hand-carving, and technology.

Large-scale wooden figures require a completely different approach than small decorations. On a large scale, it’s not just the sculptural detail that matters, but also the stability of the form, the wood’s work, weight, transport, mounting, finishing, and the way the figure is perceived from several or even a dozen meters away. At Viktor-Art, we create large wooden sculptures, religious figures, representative figures, scenographic elements, and custom premium designs for interiors, churches, hotels, restaurants, residences, and public spaces.

Our advantage lies in the combination of traditional woodcarving, 3D modeling, CNC machining, in-house wood preparation, and hand-finishing. This ensures that a large figure is not just a random block of wood, but a designed object with a controlled structure.

Hollowing from the Inside: The Technology of Large Wooden Figures

When it comes to large-scale sculptures, one of the most important issues is the behavior of wood over time. Wood behaves: it releases and absorbs moisture, contracts, expands, and reacts to environmental conditions. The larger the cross-section, the greater the internal stresses and the greater the risk of cracking. Therefore, we craft large sculptures with a full understanding of the material, and where technology requires it, we use a hollow construction.

It’s not a bas-relief or a simplified shell. The figure is developed as a complete, three-dimensional form, then technologically carved, stabilized, and closed to maintain the body’s integrity. This solution has been known in woodcarving tradition for many years: it reduces the object’s mass, limits stress, helps the wood work in a controlled manner, and significantly reduces the risk of deep cracks in large projects.

  • sacred figures and figures of saints in large format,
  • representative sculptures for churches, hotels, restaurants and residences,
  • large decorative, regional, historical and thematic figures,
  • wooden sculptures prepared for polychrome, gilding or natural finishing,
  • projects requiring analysis of mounting, center of gravity and assembly method,
  • projects combining 3D modeling, CNC and hand chiseling.

A large-scale sculpture must be designed from the outset as both a technical and artistic object. We analyze proportions, exposure, intended lighting, mounting height, detail visibility, and transportation method. For figures intended for sacred or representative interiors, we also consider the facial features, gestures, robes, patina, polychrome, and degree of decorative detail to ensure the piece looks natural within the specific space.

Own wood preparation: conventional, vacuum and microwave drying

A large-scale sculpture begins long before the first chisel cut. The wood must be selected, prepared, and dried for the specific type of project. We work with high-quality material, but equally importantly, we prepare it using our own technological process. We use conventional, vacuum, and microwave drying, allowing us to tailor the method to the species, cross-section, initial moisture content, and intended use of the piece.

Vacuum drying allows for the process to be conducted under controlled conditions at a lower moisture boiling point, which is particularly important for thick sections and wood intended for demanding projects. We also dry non-standard, industrial-sized pieces, including thick boards around 110 mm. Computer-controlled process control helps reduce excessive stresses, deformations, and the risk of drying defects. In practice, this translates into improved material stability, greater process predictability, and greater safety of the finished piece.

Wood for large sculptures cannot be treated like ordinary carpentry material. The core works differently than the surface, the glued element works differently, and the block prepared for carving differs. Therefore, the selection of drying, gluing, and processing technologies is part of the design, not an afterthought.

Design, construction and assembly of a large sculpture

For large figures, we analyze not only the appearance but also the structure: center of gravity, support points, suspension points, transport, service access, and places where fasteners can be hidden. If the design requires steel structural elements, suspensions, or dedicated fasteners, we develop them specifically for the figure. This ensures that the sculpture is not only striking but also technically sound.

Depending on the project, we can prepare a 3D model, scale, mill, hand-finish the details, apply premium polychrome, patinating, gilding, and surface protection. The final result should resemble a sculpture crafted by artisans, not a machine-made product.

Who do we make large-size figures for?

Large wooden sculptures are commissioned by investors who require a strong, prestigious element in their spaces: parishes, religious buildings, conservation studios, interior designers, hotels, restaurants, museums, theme parks, and private clients. We create new sculptures, reconstructions, objects inspired by historical designs, and custom projects created from scratch.

If you’re planning a large-scale sculpture, it’s worth preparing photos of the location, approximate dimensions, desired style, finishing details, and installation method. Based on this, we can select the technology, materials, and scope of work. See also: sacred sculptures made of wood, hand-carving and 3D modeling and scanning.

Custom wood projects — not standard products

Viktor-Art works as a custom woodcarving and CNC sculpture workshop for individual commissions: wood sculpture, sacred carving, restoration, large figures, 3D modelling and precision milling. The examples on the site and in the live Instagram feed show capabilities, not a catalogue of replicas for sale.

Best fit for

  • architects, designers and restoration contractors
  • church, heritage and interior projects
  • private or public custom wooden sculpture commissions

How projects usually start

  • send drawings, photos, dimensions or reference material
  • we assess wood, scale, technology and finishing requirements
  • the quotation is prepared individually, including production and transport constraints
